Seskhona Media contacted the office of the Speaker of the Council, Ms Fikile Magagamela to find out if she indeed postponed the selection of committee members for Kinross ward 16.
The speaker’s response was that the Ward Councillor, Ms Rose Nkabinde cancelled the meeting herself citing logistical problems.
Seskhona Media tried to get clarity on who had logistical problems since the municipality officials deployed to ensure that the election process happens accordingly, were present at the meeting, but all efforts were in vain.
The Kinross election of ward committees for both wards 16 and 17 was scheduled to take place on Tuesday, 8 February 2022, but was cancelled by the ward councillor.
One of the municipal officials deployed said he will submit a report to the office of the speaker to inform her of what transpired at the meeting.
“People attended in numbers and there was no reason to cancel the meeting.
We have pictures to show that people were there,” said one of the officials.
Residents were shocked and angered by the way the ward 16 meeting was cancelled.
“It is not the first time our councillor cancels a meeting so that she can have her own meeting with her people to get the outcome they want.
It is time we get a competent councillor elected by the people because this councillor was not elected by us,” said one of the residents from Thistle Grove.
Another resident said the councillor position need someone who is approachable, who has what it takes to represent the community, someone who is accessible, not someone who is there to serve the selfish interest of looking after family and friends.
“We are pleading with the government to give us a chance to elect someone who is willing to serve the community.”
The meeting has now been scheduled to take place on Thursday, 17 February 2022 at 16:30 for Kinross Ext 25 (Municipal Offices in Afgan) and 18:00 for Thistle Grove at Kinross Sasol Club.
