On Thursday, 25 June 2026, Bethal Management Area hosted a memorable farewell function for Area Commissioner Abel Mashaba.
Mr. Mashaba is a seasoned and remarkable career Correctional Officer who diligently served the Department of Correctional Service (DCS) since his enlistment in 1987.
He commenced his career in Barberton Correctional Centre before he served in numerous capacities of DCS until his retirement on 30 June 2026.
The event took place in Graceland Hotel Casino, Secunda. It was dignified with the presence of Chief Phangweni Mahlangu of AmaNdebele and acting Deputy Regional Commissioner (DRC) of Limpopo, Mpumalanga and North-West (LMN), Mr Nhlelela Sono, who were joined by current and former colleagues of LMN Region as well as external stakeholders.
Various speakers spoke high of Mr. Mashaba leadership skills in the administration and operations of DCS.
In his keynote remarks, Mr Sono told the audience that Mr. Mashaba left big shoes to be filled. He proclaimed that Mr Mashaba is a leader that was noticed by both the Region and National Head Office. He mentioned that it was evident when Mr Mashaba was assigned by the National Commissioner, Mr. Makgothi Thobakgale, to stabilize Pollsmoor, Remand Detention Facility in the Western Cape Management Area, short before his retirement. He commended him for successfully executing the mission without neglecting his key responsibilities in the Bethal Management Area.
“When took over Bethal Management Area, it was far from attaining 100% in the Annual Performance Programme (APP). However, under your leadership in the last financial year, 2025/26 Bethal Management Area reported 100% in the APP. You have been a successful leader, and you made your mark in the department. Your departure is a loss to LMN Regional Team because it is losing a dedicated employee of the department, fearless leader and versatile soldier who was an all-rounder,” said Sono.
On Tuesday, 30 June 2026, the executive and officials of Bethal Management Area convened and bade amomentous farewell to Area Commissioner Mashaba which coincides with his 60th birthday. The occasion was dignified by the presence of EST members and SAPS officials, who displayed drill skills.
In his last address, Mr. Mashaba thanked DCS leadership for affording him the opportunity to serve DCS. He encouraged unity and synergy amongst the officials of Bethal Management Area. He further pleaded with them to pursue their studies since education is key to personal growth and future success.
