On Monday, 15 July 2024, residents of Ward 4 in eMbalenhle submitted a memorandum to Govan Mbeki Municipality demanding electricity to be restored in their ward.
According to them, they did not have electricity for weeks due to a faulty transformer.
They said a municipal employee had allegedly told them the transformer would not be repaired until residents agreed in the form of a petition to install smart meters.
“We are against installing smart meters because they consume too much electricity, and most of us are unemployed. R500.00 electricity token is nothing with these smart meters compared to the previous ones,” said Mabheva Mahlangu, one of the concerned residents of Ward 4.
MMC of Electrical and Mechanical Engineering, Cllr. Lwandile Ziwele received and signed the memorandum on behalf of the municipality.
Govan Mbeki municipality communications spokesperson Lucky Mhlongo said the municipality would only respond to the memorandum after seven working days, which was the stipulated time on the memorandum.
