Employees working on the construction of bulk water and sewer infrastructure project in Kinross Ext 33 (also known as Marikana) left the gates opened today, 24 May 2025 and warned the security guards to not guard the area. They said the reason for them to down tools was because of non payment of their salaries for a period of four months, meanwhile the security personnel alleged to have not been paid for six months.
The disgruntled employees said they have not been working since the beginning of the month of June.
Seskhona team managed to contact Themba Lubisi, the project manager regarding the matter, and he did mention that he was aware the employees who have not been paid for months, however they will be able to pay them before the end of today. Hr further mentioned that they would only be able to pay them for one month since their invoices have not been paid by the department.
The employees have thretened to not resume work until all the outstanding months are paid.
