Musa Mthethwa (38) received a severe punishment from the Evander Regional Court.

On Monday, 23 January 2023 the Mthethwa received a total sentence of 13 years in prison for both murder and an assault with the purpose to inflict serious bodily damage.

According to reports, on Sunday, 4 October 2020 at around 21h00, in Extension 17, Marikana in Leslie, the accused fatally stabbed Mr Thulane Christopher Mabaso, aged 55.

Mr Mabaso saw Mthethwa fighting and stabbing his friend in the hand. Mthethwa turned on him and stabbed him in the neck when he attempted to break up the fight.

The accused then left the scene and thereafter authorities were informed about the incident.

Sadly, Mr Maboso suffered severe injuries, and as a result, the paramedics on the scene tragically had to declare him dead.

In respect to the victim who had his hand stabbed, a case was opened with charges of murder and assault with the purpose to cause great bodily damage.

Police conducted an inquiry, as a result of which Mthethwa was located and taken into custody the same day. He was held in detention until he was granted bail on 4, December 2020 following his initial court appearance on 5, October 2020.

The state made a compelling case against the accused during the trial, which resulted in his conviction and subsequent sentencing. Additionally, it was determined that the defendant was unfit to own a gun.

The provincial Commissioner of the SAPS in Mpumalanga, Lieutenant General Semakaleng Daphney Manamela further applauded the investigation team, the prosecution team and the judiciary for all their hard work resulted in the well-deserved sentence.
