The office of the Honourable Speaker, Cllr Fikile Magagamela, held a Youth Mock Council on Wednesday, 07 August 2024, at the Council Chambers in Secunda.
The purpose of the Youth Mock Council is to educate the youth about the significance of the Council as a political authority responsible for the political management of the municipality.
In the same vein, the Youth Mock Council aims at sharpening the thinking and debating skills of the youth in tackling complex governance issues in our municipality in particular and in the country in general.
Various secondary schools around Govan Mbeki Municipality were invited, namely: Highveld Park High School, KI Twala Secondary School, Osizweni Secondary School, Sizwakele Secondary School, Thomas Nhlabathi Secondary School, Vukuqhakaze Secondary School, Chief Ampie Mayisa Secondary School, and Thistle Grove Combined School.
The learners debated on different motions while Kamogelo Mbonani from Thomas Nhlabathi Secondary School was elected as the mayor, Surprise Mlambo from KI Twala Secondary School was the council speaker, and Mbalenhle Ngwenya from Highveld Park High School was the chief whip.
“I took this initiative because I believe that it is important that this generation learn more about politics and everything that is happening around them,” said Cllr Magagamela.
