Four suspects aged between 27 and 30 years appeared before Bethal Magistrate’s Court on Wednesday 21 August 2024 facing charges of possession of drugs known as “Nyaope”.
The suspects were arrested by members of the crime prevention unit in Bethal comprising of Sergeant Vusumuzi Mpila, Sergeant Lindiwe Mkhonto, Constable Mankweng Motloutsi and Constable Mercy Pule today, 20 August 2024 while executing crime prevention and stop and searches within Bethal area.
During the execution of their duties, members noticed a three males with one female on the busy street of Bethal and approached them.
Upon approaching the suspects, police requested to conduct a search on them and permission was granted to perform such a search.
Upon searching them, police found small packs of substances wrapped in brown plastics from three suspects and multiple packs from the other suspect and they informed the police that the contents in those packs is a substance known as nyaope which is a drug dominating in the streets of Bethal and other areas within Govan Mbeki Municipality and Gert Sibande District.
The police couldn’t let the suspects walk freely with such drugs and arrested them.
The estimated street value of the drugs is three thousand rand(R3000-00). The quart was then taken to Bethal Police cells for further arrest and detention.
The contents were seized from the suspects which will be used as evidence in court.The matter was postponed to 05 September 2024 for formal bail application and all accused are remanded in custody.
