A 38-year-old woman from eMbalenhle appeared before the Evander Magistrate Court for her formal bail hearing on Tuesday, 09 January 2024 on charges of murder.

It is alleged that the woman went to the clinic on Thursday, 07 December 2023, with her 10-month-old child, where she informed the nurses that she gave the child rat poison before consuming the poison herself.

The child was therefore examined and certified deceased at the clinic.

The woman was rushed to Evander Hospital, where she was eventually arrested after being discharged.

On the witness stand, the accused’s brother testified, confirming her alternative address should she be granted bail and that she wouldn’t be a danger to herself or his children.

The state prosecutor questioned which measures the brother will put in place to ensure the safety of his own children based on the allegations faced by the sister.

In her defense, the brother replied that his wife will keep an eye on the accused at all times and that he will keep chemicals like rat poison and others, such as antifreezes, in a safe place where the accused won’t have access.

The state opposes the release of the women on bail.

The matter was then postponed to Monday, 15 January 2024 for further information.

The accused was remanded in custody.
