A talented young athlete from the Gert Sibande District’s Govan Mbeki Municipality is preparing for the opportunity of a lifetime. However, she needs the support of her community to help make her dream a reality.

Butuka Lesego Boshielo (16) has been selected by Prestige Youth Sports South Africa as one of only 40 players nationwide to represent South Africa at an international netball tour in Thailand, taking place from 29 November to 9 December 2026.

Her achievement is especially remarkable as she is the only player from the Gert Sibande District’s Govan Mbeki Municipality to secure a place in this prestigious touring squad. Her selection reflects years of dedication, discipline, resilience and exceptional talent on the netball court.

Butuka’s journey has not been easy. She lost her mother at the age of two and has been raised by her aunt and uncle, who have worked hard to give her love, guidance and the best opportunities possible despite financial challenges.

During an interview, Butuka shared how important netball has been in her life.

“Netball is the one thing that keeps me away from doing bad things. When I am on the court, I feel focused, happy and I know that I am working towards something better for my future.”

For Butuka, netball is more than a sport. It is a safe space, a source of discipline, and a reason to keep believing in herself. It has given her direction, confidence and a dream far bigger than her circumstances.

Her favourite Proteas player is Bongi Msomi, whom she has had the special opportunity to meet. Butuka says she sees herself in Bongi’s journey and hopes to one day inspire others in the same way.

“When I see Bongi Msomi, I see myself in her. One day, I want to be Gert Sibande’s Bongi. I want young girls from my community to see that it is possible to dream big and achieve their goals.”

Butuka also expressed deep gratitude to the people who have stood beside her throughout her life.

“I would like to thank my aunt and uncle who have been with me throughout this life journey. They have given me the best opportunities that life can give, and I want to make them proud.”

The total cost of the international tour is R55,000, covering flights, accommodation, meals, transport, tournament fees and official tour apparel. Through the generosity of family, friends and supporters, R6,000 has already been raised. This leaves an outstanding balance of R49,000.

The organisers require payments according to the following schedule:

• 31 July 2026: R10,000

• 31 August 2026: R15,000

• 30 September 2026: R15,000

• 31 October 2026: R15,000

Every contribution, no matter the amount, will bring Butukacloser to representing not only her community, but also South Africa on an international stage.

Businesses, organisations and individuals are encouraged to support this determined young athlete. A contribution towards Butuka’s journey is not only an investment in sport—it is an investment in a young girl who has chosen purpose, discipline and hope. It is an opportunity to help a future leader, role model and athlete rise above her circumstances.

For Butuka, this tour is more than a sporting opportunity. It is a chance to represent her country, honour her aunt and uncle’s sacrifices, inspire other young people from rural communities, and show that talent, determination and hard work can overcome even the greatest challenges.
