Patrick Ntiwane (46) has been sentenced to 20 years of imprisonment for attempted murder (Gender-based violence related) by the Mhala Regional Court.

The court heard how the victim was coming from work on 16 September 2023, and after being dropped by a taxi, she came across the accused, who was having a panga in his possession.

The accused then grabbed her and threatened to finish her off. It was during this time when the accused assaulted her and stabbed her. She sustained serious injuries all over her body. The accused continued to attack her with a panga, and her hand was cut off as a result.

Thereafter, the accused fled the scene, leaving the defenceless victim to fend for herself.

A case was opened, and the investigators worked tirelessly until the accused was apprehended on 10 November 2024.

The accused was brought to court and was convicted, hence his sentencing was on Monday, 24 February 2025, to 20 years imprisonment.

The Acting Provincial Commissioner of the SAPS in Mpumalanga, Major General (Dr.) Zeph Mkhwanazi, has hailed the sentencing as one that will send a strong message to other perpetrators of gender-based violence and femicide that they, too, will get their day.

“We are encouraged by the harsh sentencing that was handed to this perpetrator of GBVF. We also appreciate the collaboration displayed between the team of investigators, the Prosecution team and the judiciary, which culminated into the well-deserved sentence, ” said the General.
