Members of the Economic Freedom Fighters Student Command (EFFSC) at Gert Sibande College, Evander Campus, joined the nationwide call for justice for Cwecwe, a 7-year-old girl who was allegedly raped in October 2024.

The students staged a peaceful march from the college’s main gate, raising their voices in chants of “Justice for Baby Cwecwe.”

This demonstration follows a heartfelt podcast interview in which Cwecwe’s mother revealed that, despite the gravity of the incident, the family has not yet received justice.

Her public appeal has reignited calls for action across the country, inspiring South Africans from various provinces — including the Eastern Cape — to mobilize in solidarity. The issue has also empowered other survivors of sexual violence to speak out, hoping their stories will also be heard and justice served.

“The rape statistics are high in our country. We don’t only hear about these incidents on TV — young girls face them in our very own communities,” said Karabo Mokoena, Chairperson of the EFFSC at GS College, Evander Campus.

“We may even have victims on our campus who are afraid to come forward, and this silence affects them academically and emotionally.”

Mokoena emphasized that the purpose of the march was not only to support Cwecwe’s family but also to create a safe and supportive environment for students who may be suffering in silence.

“By standing together, we hope to break the stigma and encourage more survivors to speak up,” he added.

The students expressed their hope that justice will be served for Baby Cwecwe, her family, and all other victims of sexual violence. The demonstration reflects a broader call for accountability, justice reform, and greater support for survivors throughout the country.
