Umdzabu Cultural Group, in conjunction with the police and other different stakeholders, hosted a Heritage 017 first-ever event on Tuesday, 24 September 2024, in Leandra at Nyuluka Old Prison.

The purpose of the event was to celebrate Heritage Day and embrace it through culture and the arts. Heritage 017 was mainly formed for all cultural groups in communities within the Gert Sibande district.

According to Mr. Nkambule, the event was hosted at the old prison, which he thinks forms part of the community’s heritage as it is now used to shelter most homeless people in the area.

Different cultural groups from the district braced the event in their different cultural attire, performing gumboot dance, skits, and cultural dances.

We saw that art is influential; therefore, it is of importance that sometimes we gather in the name of the arts, sharing ideas that would build our community. In modern art it is now crowded and cultural art is now scars saw it fit as heritage 017 to revive cultural arts in our communities, we are looking forward to expanding in the long run, said Bongi Palmer, a member of Umdzabu cultural group.
