The N4 toll road near Schoemanskloof towards Mbombela claimed five lives today, o4 March 2022, following a side swipe collision which occurred between a minibus taxi and a truck.
The truck then collided head on with a light delivery vehicle which was travelling the opposite direction.
Four of the deceased’s were occupants in the minibus including the driver thereof and the driver of the light delivery vehicle.
Meanwhile three of the deceased in the minibus are believed to be tourists from Netherlands.
The five victims died at the scene of the accident.
Two passengers who were in the taxi and the truck driver were seriously injured and various ambulances responded.
The injured were subsequently rushed to nearby hospitals.
The cause of the crash is still unclear and the investigation is still underway.
Mpumalanga MEC for Community Safety, Security and Liaison, Vusi Shongwe, expressed concern over the frequency of deadly road crashes in the province and send his heartfelt condolences to the bereaved families and wishes the injured speedy recovery.
Shongwe further urged motorists to be vigilant on the road to avoid needless and avoidable tragedies such as this one.
“We must all play our part in curbing these crashes.
Our roads must not be turned into killing fields by reckless drivers.
“Motorists should respect the rules of the road and exercise required diligence when they are behind the steering wheel,” said Shongwe with concern.
