Govan Mbeki Municipality Speaker Cllr Fikile Magagamela hosted a prayer day in conjunction with different faith-based organizations on Friday, 10 November 2023, at Lilian Ngoyi Hall in Secunda.

The purpose of the event was to pray against social ills, including gender-based violence, child abuse, crime, substance abuse, a high unemployment rate, accidents, and other socioeconomic issues.

Leaders and various pastors from Govan Mbeki Municipality delivered messages and prayed, seeking divine intervention.

“We all know that we are facing a series of social ills in our communities, ranging from social immorality, the breakdown of ethics, crime, murder, suicides, gender-based violence and femicide, and all other sorts of criminal and deviant behavior ravaging the social fiber of our communities.

These challenges happen across all sectors of society, and the Govan Mbeki municipality is no exception.

Gender-based violence and femicide are the elephants in the room, which President Cyril Ramaphosa has declared the second pandemic in South Africa.

This prayer session takes place as we are preparing for the national and provincial elections scheduled to take place in 2024.

We are resolute in our view that this upcoming election should occur under peaceful conditions.

We urge all political parties to abide by the IEC Code of Conduct and refrain from any acts that will violate this Code of  Conduct,” said the speaker of the GMM council, delivering her keynote address.

The event was honored by the presence of Sipho Ngwenya, a gospel singer, who braced the crowd with his worship and praise songs.
