Holfontein residents demand service delivery from the municipality.

Residents from Holfontein farm located near Trichardt marched to Secunda, Govan Mbeki municipality, on Friday 26 July 2024.

The purpose of the march was to hand deliver a memorandum of demands to the executive mayor of Govan Mbeki municipality, Cllr Nhlakanipho Zuma.

The residents also accused the municipality of giving them pit toilets during election time that they no longer come to collect.

These pit toilets have an unplesant smell; they have gone three weeks without being collected. Why did the municipality bring these toilets to us if they are now unable to pick them up, asked Nelisiwe, a committee member delivering the memorandum.

The residents are aggrieved by the following service delivery issues.

  • The title deed registered to the owners of the farm
  • Electricity
  • Roads infrastructure
  • Water taps to be installed house to house
  • RDP houses
  • Community hall
  • Scholar transport
  • Toilets
  • Street lights
  • A meeting with the area councillor

The residents also demanded a meeting with Mr. Koos Van Der Merwe together with human settlement officials.

Cllr Thandi Mthsweni, the MMC of planning and community development, received the memorandum on behalf of the executive mayor.
