From September 2022 to date, the Leandra police station has more than 17 suicide and attempts cases, which raises an alarming concern in the station.

With Leandra being a small growing township, suicide seems to be a growing pandemic in the area.

The Seskhona News team visited the Leandra police station on 09 May 2023 after an invite was extended by Constable Ngobeni from the station.

According to constable Ngobeni, this year there are higher cases of suicide with men having a higher rate than women.

In most of these incidents, men hang themselves, while women drink poison and are mostly found to have been pregnant after the incident.

According to the information at police disposal, it seems unemployment is playing a huge role in these incidents, with relationships and financial difficulties.

These reported suicide cases rage from school learners to persons up to the age of 40 years.

Constable Ngobeni is concerned that even those rescued from trying to commit suicide are not referred to the relevant officials who are trained to deal with such situations, which merely solves the problem temporarily.
