The Speaker of Council of the Govan Mbeki Municipality, Cllr Fikile Magagamela, in partnership with the Department of Education, hosted a second annual school debate competition sponsored by Thungela on Thursday, 18 April 2024, at the Lillian Ngoyi Centre in Secunda.
The aim of the event is to encourage reading and research among high school learners.
It also helps them learn how to communicate confidently and effectively.
A total of ten (10) schools honoured the invitation and participated in the competition.
Although the learners were given difficult topics, debaters from Thomas Nhlabathi Secondary School came out victorious.

Meanwhile, K.I. Twala Secondary School was crowned in 2nd place and Highveld Park High School in 3rd place.

Teachers and learners were excited and vowed to participate in the school debate competition in 2025.
