Andile Brian Ndlangamandla (44) and Thembinkosi Mandla Chonco (37) were sentenced to life imprisonment each for the premeditated murder of Middelburg Taxi Association Chairperson, Masinya Charlie Mthimunye, by the High Court of South Africa: Middelburg Division. The conviction stems from an incident on 20 September 2018.

The court heard that the accused, armed with firearms, went to the deceased’s property in Rooibos Kranse, Middelburg, under the guise of buying cattle. While engaging with Mthimunye and his male friend, the accused produced firearms, fatally shooting the deceased before fleeing the scene. Police investigations led to the arrest of four suspects. One suspect passed away before the trial began, and another turned state witness.

During the trial, the accused denied their involvement. However, State Advocate Lawrence Motheogane presented compelling evidence, including testimony from the state witness who detailed the crime and confirmed Ndlangamandla’s role in orchestrating the murder. The evidence revealed that Ndlangamandla hired a hitman for R40,000 and actively managed the execution of the crime.

In aggravation of sentencing, the victim’s widow shared the profound impact of the murder, including financial struggles and the emotional toll on her family. Judge Thandolwethu Mankge, in delivering the sentence, highlighted the premeditated and violent nature of the crime, emphasizing its intent to disrupt the taxi industry in eMalahleni. Both accused were sentenced to life imprisonment for premeditated murder and declared unfit to possess firearms.

The National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) welcomes the conviction and sentencing, which reflect the commitment to delivering justice for victims and their families. These cases underscore the tireless efforts of law enforcement and prosecutorial teams to hold violent criminals accountable and ensure safer communities.
