The Chairperson of the ANC Youth League in Mpumalanga, Bethuel Zunguza, submitted a petition to the NCOP

(National Council of Provinces) Chairperson, Mrs Refiloe Mtsweni Tsipane, on Wednesday, 18 February 2026, in Cape Town.

The petition aims to address the insufficient number of institutions of higher learning in Mpumalanga.

Zunguza said the petition calls for the resuscitation of the following former colleges:

  • Mapulaneng College
  • Marapyane College
  • Mgwenya College
  • Elijah Mango College
  • Hoxani College of Education
  • VUT Secunda Campus

According to the Youth League, those colleges have been abandoned and are in disrepair for many years since their official closing.

“This action seeks to revive and reopen these institutions to advance access to quality education, youth development, and rural development across the province. The NCOP has been given three months to respond to the petition,” said Zunguza.
