A 33-year-old woman has been arrested by the police in Bushbuckridge after the death of her child under suspicious circumstances. The incident took place in Boikhutso Trust, outside Bushbuckridge, on Monday, 19 August 2024.

The woman’s arrest follows the tragic incident involving the death of her 8-month-old child.

Preliminary reports suggest that the child’s death could be the result of poisoning, and the incident was brought to the attention of the police by a local funeral parlour, prompting an immediate response.

On arrival at the scene, the men and women in blue discovered the infant laying motionless, with the mother present. As part of the ongoing investigation, the forensic team has begun the spadework through the gathering of evidence with the hope of determining the cause of death.

The motive behind the incident is unknown at this stage, but it will form part of the investigation.

The investigation is still ongoing, and the public will be updated as further information becomes available.

The female suspect is expected to appear at the Bushbuckridge Magistrate’s Court soon.

The Acting Provincial Commissioner of the SAPS in Mpumalanga, Major General Dr. Zeph Mkhwanazi, has slammed the alleged killing of the child and called on members of the public to refrain from taking out their frustration upon innocent children.

“The law should surely deal decisively with any person who harms children, regardless of any excuse that one may think of. Our role is to protect the vulnerable, including children,” said the general.
