Community members, together with the staff at Secunda Mall, celebrated the lighting of the granny square Christmas tree on the 21st of October 2025.

The tree is situated at entrance 2 near Symphony’s restaurant.

The initiative of the beautiful and unique tree came up in February 2025, when three (3) different knitting groups located in Secunda were informed about the idea and agreed to share their lovely talent of crocheting.

The three groups include pensioners and housewives, and about thirty (30) women were crocheting.

“One would finish at least 5 squares in a day because one square would take about two hours,” said Ms Celeste Potgieter.

The ladies managed to make 3000 blocks and only used 2700 for the 6-metre-tall tree.

Ms Potgieter further explained that after the festive season, the tree will be disabled, and the blocks that were used for the tree will be useful, as they will use them for blankets, which will be donated just before the winter season in 2026, including the other 300 that were left.

“Our hard work will pay off because someone will be happy and warm with the blankets that will be donated,” she said.

The beautiful and unique Christmas tree will be displayed till the end of the festive season.

“I am very happy because this shows how much we adore and love our Secunda Mall. The Mall looks extremely beautiful, especially at night,” said Emma Msimango.
