A group of eight (8) women, aged 19 – 35, were allegedly gang raped by a group of 80 illegal miners in Krugersdorp.
Other members of the production crew were also robbed during the attack at a mine dump in West Village.
Police acted swiftly to arrest the suspects, who allegedly ambushed and raped the group after the incident on Thursday, 28 July.
The crew of 22 people (12 women and 10 men), were busy filming a music video when they were allegedly attacked by a group of armed men wearing balaclavas and blankets.
Two men were shot dead after allegedly pointing firearms at police during the operation.
The suspects were arrested for contravention of the Immigration Act.
Two unlicensed firearms and explosives have been recovered, along with stolen items.
Police are investigating 32 counts of rape and one of armed robbery.
Police Minister Bheki Cele visited the crime scene on Friday, 29 July, followed by senior policing officials, including police commissioner Fannie Masemola.
Minister Cele said forensic services have started the DNA analysis of more than 80 suspects who were arrested in connection with the rape and robbery of eight (8) women in Krugersdorp.
Among others it involved Crime Intelligence, the Special Task Force and tracker helicopters, along with the Department of Home Affairs and private security stakeholders.
