A mother (67) and her son (35) were detained on Wednesday, 15 March2023, for breaking the terms of the Gun Control Act 60 of 2000. The pair apprehended in Secunda after an intelligence-driven disruptive operation run by the Severe Organized Crime Investigation team of the Hawks in Secunda along with Secunda Crime Intelligence.

This break through came after a thorough examination into a gun that was seized on Wednesday 09 March 2023 was conducted during the arrest of a suspected drug dealer.

According to reports, the Hawks’ investigation established that the family owns the handgun.

Investigations revealed that the pair allegedly gave the dealer the .38 special revolver and six live rounds of ammunition after the son allegedly owed the dealer R1 500.00 for drugs and later offered it as payment.

The pair was then arrested and charged.

They appeared in the Secunda Magistrate Court on Thursday, 16 March 2023.

Major General Gerber, Provincial Head of the Hawks in Mpumalanga, is making a plea for residents to share information concerning unlawful gun possession and drug trafficking in the region.
