A collision involving a minibus, a bakkie, and an articulated truck has left three people dead on the D2296 Road between Karino and Mbombela this morning.

The minibus was transporting learners who were travelling to various schools in Mbombela.

The deceased are the driver and passenger of the bakkie and one learner who was an occupant in the midi bus.

Twenty-seven (27) people sustained injuries varying from slight to serious, and they were rushed to nearby hospitals for treatment.

The injured include the driver of the minibus and twenty-six (26) learners.

The D2296 road between Karino and Mbombela is currently closed. Vehicles travelling to and from Mbombela can use the N4 Toll Road.

Although the cause of the crash has yet to be established through investigations, it is suspected that unsafe overtaking might have been the cause.

Mpumalanga Community Safety, Security, and Liaison MEC Jackie Macie sends his heartfelt condolences to the families of the deceased and wishes those in hospitals a speedy recovery.

The MEC is concerned about the number of crashes involving school learners lately.

He says that this is an indication that there is a problem that needs to be dealt with urgently.

“We cannot continue losing innocent young people on our roads due to recklessness. This must just come to an end,” he said.
