Govan Mbeki Municipality PR Councillor John Mahlangu of the ARP appeared at the Evander Magistrate Court on Monday, 19 September 2022 for bail application and the matter was subsequently postponed to Thursday, 22 September 2022 for formal bail application.
This came after a woman who happened to be a widow was allegedly assaulted with a panga by the Councillor of on Tuesday, 13 September 2022 in eMbalenhle, Ext 22 ( Azania).
According to the victim, a neighbour confronted her about his chicken which he claimed was “locked” in her yard and the she went to the offices of Azania for intervention.
That is when she was allegedly assaulted by the accused with a panga.
The victim further mentioned that the suspect tried to hack her on the head and she blocked with her right hand resulting into a cut in her hand.
Cllr Mahlangu was said to have also insulted her and told her that she cannot even afford a lawyer.
She received medical treatment at Evander hospital and a case of assault with the intent to do grievous bodily harm was opened at Embalenhle police station leading to the arrested of the councillor on Friday, 16 September 2022.
During his first appearance at the Evander Magistrate Court on Monday, 19 September 2022, he had elected to be represented by legal aid and after recess, elected to be represented by a private legal representative.
The case was postponed to Thursday, 22 September 2022 for a formal bail application while he remain in custody.
