The Govan Mbeki Municipality, in collaboration with the speaker of council, celebrated Youth Month differently by hosting the Speakers Mock Council on Friday, 23 June 2023 at the Council Chamber in Secunda.
The Mock Council debate aims to provide training opportunities for learners and for young people to enhance their understanding of the work of the Legislative Council as well as to promote their political awareness.
The discussion provided learners with the chance to role-play as legislators to voice their opinions on matters of public concern or to urge the government to adopt particular steps; or as public servants to address the motion and politicians’ speeches.
“Problems and opportunities are a part of our lives, and we must face them both with a positive mind,” said Cllr Fikile Magagamela, Speaker of Council.
Six (6) different schools from GMM were invited, namely, K.I Twala; Kiriyatswane Secondary School; Highveld Park High School; Sizwakele Secondary School; Evander High School and Thomas Nhlabathi Secondary School.
Cllr Fikile Magagamela hopes that this occasion motivates and encourages all other young people to be positive and happy in life.
