A grade seven (7) learner from Buyani Primary School in eMbalenhle lost his life due to the Nehawu strike which took place from 05 March 2023 till 11 March 2023.
The tragic incident happened after the learner fell sick at school on the Friday of the strike.
“He just started complaining about being unable to breathe and he was indeed gasping for air,” said one of the educators at the school.
It was further stated that the learner was rushed to Evander Hospital for treatment, where he was returned due to the strike.
“The nurse explicitly said that they wouldn’t be able to attend to him as they were on strike.
No one even bothered to asses the state of his health before he was turned away,” she said.
Reports state that the learner was dropped off at home safely on Friday, and he suffered yet another attack the following Monday morning.
His parents asked the neighbors to rush him to hospital where he unfortunately succumbed on his way there.
“We have lost a brilliant student simply because our colleagues put their needs before those of people who need them the most, even vulnerable children suffered from this strike,” said the teacher.
Seskhona Media tried to contact Evander Hospital for a comment, but with no luck.
