On Friday, 17 March 2023, Sasol and Thungela delivered bulk sewerage infrastructure in the Govan Mbeki Municipality (GMM).

To date, Sasol has upgraded two pump stations in eMbalenhle, five pump stations in Kinross, and in Leandra, Sasol upgraded the pump station and Rising Main Sewer System Infrastructure takes the total number of upgrades to nine pump stations.

On the Leandra project, Sasol, Thungela and GMM collaborated to lay pipes for the infrastructure and pipeline network which connects to the N17 pump station.

This initiative started when the entities came together to address a challenge of ageing sanitation infrastructure faced by numerous municipalities around South Africa.

The sewerage system infrastructure will ensure that community members continue to live in hygienic conditions that enable the collection, treatment and disposal of wastewater in a non-hazardous manner to people and the environment.

“I urge the community to take good care of this upgraded infrastructure as well as all our other infrastructure systems that we have when disposing of solid waste.

Please also remember not to dispose any waste into the pipelines, drain systems, and in canals. It is important for all of us to ensure the continued protection of all water and sanitation infrastructure,” says Victor Bester, Senior Vice President at Sasol.

Edrich Welthagen, General Manager of Isibonelo Colliery, said, “We are proud to be part of this partnership which supports the Municipality’s efforts and its ability to reduce waste which is being released in the environment and prevent diseases that can be caused by contaminants that are harmful to plants, animals, and humans.”

Cllr Nhlakanipho Zuma, Executive Mayor of Govan Mbeki Municipality, said, “We are very pleased with the completion of this project because it addresses the scourge of poor sanitation and restores our people’s pride. This project belongs to the people of Leandra and we urge community members to safeguard this infrastructure as it will go a long way in eradicating sewer spillages.”

This takes place a few days before Human Rights Day as an initiative that demonstrates Sustainable Development Goal 6: “Clean water and sanitation for all”.

As socially responsible citizens, we take great pleasure in caring for our people and ensuring that whenever there is a community need, we come together and develop sustainable solutions.
