Kinross police warn motorists of the rise in hijacking incidents on the R547 road towards Kriel.
According to the police, there have been several incidents of hijacking reported recently at the Kinross police station.
“At most, the perpetrators are more than two pretending to be hitchhiking. When the driver stops to give them a lift, one of them will sit behind the driver’s seat. When en route, one will ask to be dropped off near 50/50 Crossing, and as soon as the vehicle stops, the one at the back will use a rope to strangle the driver and force him out of the driver’s seat.
They will then drive with the owner of the car until they ditch him in a secluded area,” Said Constable Gcinile Mondlane, spokesperson of the Kinross police station.
Mondlane further stated that there were visible Road Signs of Hijacking at the Kinross Fourways intersection; however, people steal them, making it difficult for motorists who are unfamiliar with the road to be aware of the risks of giving a lift to hitchhikers.
