Police in Leslie have managed to apprehend two alleged hijackers.

Several hijacking and car thefts cases have been opened at the Leslie police station whereby drivers are hijacked and robbed of their vehicles and other personal belongings.

This hijackers are alleged to be hitchhikers who pose as going to work or a woman carrying a child.

They would then demand money and other personal belongings before heading off with your vehicle leaving the driver stranded in a veld.

In a recent incident, a driver alleged that on Saturday, 10 June 2023 at approximately 18h30 when he got to Leslie, three (3) male persons posing as hitchhikers approached him asking for a lift to Devon.

The driver then accommodated them.

Whilst driving, he alleges that he felt a rope going around his neck and was then strangled and pulled back by the two men sitting behind him.

The driver of the vehicle further alleges that he was beaten up whilst his hands were tied behind his back.

the hijackers thereafter demanded a sum of R3500.00 to let him go.

Since he did not have the amount they demanded, they then put him at the back of the bakkie and as they tried to speed off Leslie Police who were on patrol noticed something amiss and stopped the vehicle.

The alleged hijackers tried to flee the scene but were caught on the run by the police.   

The alleged hijackers, Siduduzo Luthuli and Tebogo Mokwe appeared before the Leslie Magistrate court on Wednesday, 21 June 2023. Their matter was postponed due to recording machine in court not functioning.
