Sasol Club in Embalenhle was filled with purpose and emotion on Saturday, 19 September 2026 as young boys and their parents gathered for the Vuka Ungasali Mfana workshop, a day focused on confidence-building, mentorship and open conversations about the challenges facing young boys today.
Under the theme “Rise Up. Don’t Be Left Behind,” the event brought together community leaders, mentors, performers, parents and young boys for a programme centred on personal development and positive male role models.
Proceedings were led by programme director Mr Khwezi Mthembu, who opened the event with words of encouragement and reflection before an opening prayer and introductions.
A community representative reminded attendees that raising strong, responsible and grounded young men is a collective responsibility that extends beyond parents and families to the broader community.
A speaker from MIAMI (Men Inspired And Making Improvement) highlighted the importance of men becoming positive role models for the next generation, while Ms Nthayi Khau of Buwa Lenna Mosadi brought a parent’s and woman’s perspective to discussions around discipline, respect and positive fatherhood.
The programme also included an entertaining performance by Siyonqoba Performing Arts, which kept the children engaged while incorporating important life lessons.
The performance was described by organisers as a highlight of the day and an example of “edutainment at its best.”
The keynote address was delivered by Mr Mpumelelo Buthelezi of Boys Mentorship South Africa, who took a hands-on approach to engaging the young boys.
Buthelezi began with an ice-breaking exercise before dividing participants into three groups. Each group was given a topic to discuss and later presented its views to the entire gathering.
The group discussions became one of the most memorable parts of the workshop, encouraging the young participants to express themselves, listen to others and reflect on issues affecting their lives.
At the centre of Buthelezi’s message was the importance of identity and self-awareness.
“It is extremely important for a young boy to know who they are in order to live up to their true potential,” Mr Buthelezi Said.
The message resonated with both parents and young boys and reflected the central purpose of the workshop — helping young people understand themselves, build confidence and develop into responsible members of society.
The programme concluded with a vote of thanks recognising the speakers, performers, partners, sponsors and, most importantly, the young boys who participated in the day’s activities.
