Precious Makhubu (32) appeared before the Evander Magistrate Court on Tuesday, 01 April 2025, for allegedly setting her boyfriend on fire using paraffin.
Makhubu is facing charges of attempted murder and assault GBH with intent to cause grievous bodily harm.
According to the victim, on the 28th of September 2024, he had an argument with the accused, Precious, who was his girlfriend, and on their way home she was assaulting him and telling him that she would burn him.
She then jumped the gate and got hold of paraffin, which she used to pour on the victim before setting him alight.
The victim was hospitalized for almost three months. He suffered third-degree burn wounds all over his body; his hands are currently not healing to a point that one needs to be amputated. After being discharged, he went back to stay with the said girlfriend out of love, hoping she could show remorse.
Despite nurses persuading the victim to open a case against the girlfriend, he hoped she would change and show remorse, but that was not the case.
The victim said he decided to open a case against the girlfriend after she threatened him, saying she will finish him off; therefore, he now fears for his safety.
The state opposed her release on bail citing reasons that the victim will not be safe.
However the court granted her bail, and gave the victim a protection order.
