The senior citizens of Govan Mbeki Municipality commemorated Human Rights Day in Style.
They spent their day with the MEC of Culture, Sport and Recreation, Ms Thandi Shongwe together with other political figures from within the province.
The event was organised by Omama Besxaxa in partnership with the Mpumalanga Department of Culture, Sport and Recreation.
The event was held at Johan Stegmann Theatre in Secunda and several artists entertained them.
Omama Besxaxa is a group of elderly people in the field of arts who established an organisation that focuses on the entertainment of elderly people.
Chairperson of GMM Golden Oldies, Ms Ethel Makhele used the platform to remind attendees and the government
representatives of the rights of elderly people.
The newly appointed MEC of Culture, Sport and Recreation, Ms Thandi Shongwe urged the department to ensure that they use proper venue for the elderly people.
She spoke against the abuse of elderly people and the killing of people with albinism.
“We do not want to trample on your rights as the elderly people and that was the reason we decided to spend a day with you,” said the MEC.
She further applauded the elderly people for looking after their grandchildren and ensuring that they attend school, while their parents are at work.
Ms Shongwe encouraged people to read the bill of rights to stay relevant.
