On Saturday night 27 May 2023, a head-on collision involving an articulated truck and a sedan on the N17 route between Breyten and Ermelo resulted in the deaths of four individuals.

The fatalities were of all the occupants in the sedan which includes the driver and three other passengers.

Meanwhile two other sedan occupants sustained serious injuries and were transported Ermelo Provincial hospital for medical treatment.

The driver of the truck escaped with no injuries.

According to speculation, a risky overtaking attempt may have caused the accident.

The inquiry by the authorities, however, is currently focused on the crash.

The sedan had just crossed the R65 road and was about to reach the N17.

The four deceased and the two injured passengers are all males estimated to be between 30 and 35 years of age.

Mpumalanga MEC for Community Safety, Security and Liaison, Vusi Shongwe, has reminded motorists to obey the rules of the road and use the road with greater caution, especially at night when visibility is poor.

“Most of the crashes happen at night due to various reasons which include poor visibility and reckless driving.

Motorists are therefore encouraged to be more cautious and obey the rules of the road.

This will help to curb these deadly crashes,” Shongwe says.
