Residents of eMbalenhle went to the graveyard at Ext 14 in response to the video circulating on social media platforms, showcasing vandalism of the graves. The damage done on most graves was unbearable.
Seskhona Media went to the graveyard to check on the alleged information and found some families who also went to check the graves of their loved ones on Monday, 27 January 2024.
People who went to the graveyard were left devastated when realizing that what they saw in the video was true.
The Seskhona News team managed to speak to some of the parents, rather families, who were devastated and concerned about the conditions in which the graves of their loved ones were.
“My child’s grave had a tile and stones around it, but I cannot even trace it now because these people removed everything. I used to mark the grave, said one of the parents.
It would seem as if the people who allegedly vandalized the graves also swapped the crosses, boards with names, and items used to mark them.
“This is madness because now we won’t be able to visit our late children since we will not be sure if it is the correct grave or not,” said the devastated families.
While other families were still searching for their loves ones’ burial places, others spent the morning fixing and cleaning them.
Some people alleged that it might be someone who was practicing rituals and targeted one burial place but started vandalizing other graves to mislead evidence.
“Members of the public are urged to visit and check if their late loved ones resting places are still in good condition, said the Govan Mbeki Municipality Speaker of Council,” Cllr. Fikile Magagamela.
