The Department of Culture, Sport and Recreation in Mpumalanga hosted a pre-launch of the official 2025 Mpumalanga Cultural Xperience, yesterday, 06 October 2025, with a Panorama Route Media tour in Mbombela, Nelspruit.

The day was graced with various media houses, including international media coverage.

The event aimed on promoting and learning about the golden heritage at Pilgrims Rest which is situated on the magnificent eastern Escarpment region of the Mpumalanga Province.

The area is richly imbued with a diversity of natural, cultural and historic gems.

The history of Pilgrim’s Rest dates back to ancient times, when unknown black miners worked the quartz reefs in the area of gold. The historic village was founded in 1873, when alluvial gold was discovered in Pilgrim’s Creek.

During the course of the day, five (5) village museums were explored; the Printing Museum, Central Garage, Dredzen shop & house museum, Victorian house museum, Thelwall’s Museum.

Participants further toured the Alanglade Period House Museum which was built in 1915 by the Transvaal Gold Mining Estates to serve as the official mine manager’s residence at Pilgrim’s Rest.
