The SAPS in Mpumalanga intensifies the search for anyone behind the murder of a child subsequent to the disturbing discovery of the body of a two-year-old boy in Embalenhle today, 21 October 2024. Khayone Xavier Phakeni (2) had been reported missing from Embalenhle on Wednesday, 09 October 2024.
Members of the investigation team from Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences (FCS) Unit were alerted by community members regarding a child’s body in an open field in Extension 15, Embalenhle. Upon arrival at the scene, the team found the remains of the child wrapped in a blanket, and the clothing matched what the missing child was wearing at the time of his disappearance. Medical personnel pronounced the child dead at the scene.
A murder case has been opened in connection with this tragic incident, and efforts are underway to apprehend the perpetrator(s). The investigation remains ongoing.
According to reports, the child went missing while playing outside his home. Despite extensive search efforts by the mother and neighbours, the child could not be located, and the matter was then reported to the Police. The men and women in Blue searched for the child as well but without any success until today when the gruesome discovery was made.
There will be further forensic investigation that will be conducted as part of the ongoing probe.
So far no arrests were made but the SAPS remains committed to resolving this case and holding the offenders accountable.

Meanwhile the Acting Provincial Commissioner of the SAPS in Mpumalanga, Major General (Dr) Zeph Mkhwanazi, has strongly condemned the heinous crime and instructed the investigation team to work diligently to bring those responsible to justice. The General further affirmed the dedication of the SAPS to pursue justice and expresses confidence in making a breakthrough in the investigation.
