Sasol continues to contribute to a green environment in public spaces through an ongoing tree planting initiative. Nearly 100 trees have so far been planted across the Govan Mbeki Municipality (GMM) since September 2023.
The trees have been planted on school grounds and at public health institutions, in a combined partnership with the Department of Education, Department of Health, Extreme Thoughts, Embalenhle Advice Office, and the South African Healthcare Foundation.
To further drive awareness on the importance of caring for the environment, learners from GMM schools are educated about the importance of growing trees. The benefits of growing trees include providing shade, protecting against strong winds, significantly reducing temperatures in and around homes and slowing down water evaporation.
So far, with the help of Sasol volunteers, trees have been planted at Trichardtfontein Primary School, Sizwakele Secondary School, Highveld Ridge Primary School, Emdibini Primary School, Evander High School, Evander Hospital, Embalenhle Ext 14 and 19 Clinic, Maphala Gulube Primary School, and public areas in eMbalenhle.
This organic initiative is in line with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goal 13, which calls for urgent action to combat climate change and its impacts. Climate change threatens people with increased flooding, extreme heat, increased food and water scarcity, more disease, and economic loss.
Sasol cares about the environment and strives to empower and educate communities.
