The security officer who allegedly shot and killed a a man on Mandela Drive at Secunda was granted bail on Friday, 25 November 2022 after his first appearance at Secunda Magistrate’s Court.
Bail was granted in the sum of R4000 due to the exceptional circumstances presented by the accused such as being young, not having previous offences or pending cases and that he was on duty on the day of the incident.
According the spokesperson of Mpumalanga Police, Brigadier Selvy Mohlala, the Police at Secunda are investigating a fatal incident.
“It is alleged that the Police at Secunda received information regarding a shooting incident at Nelson Mandela Drive in Secunda and upon arrival the they found an ambulance with a male person inside who had sustained gunshot wounds.
The victim was taken by an ambulance to hospital where he succumbed to the injuries.
It is said that a security officer allegedly opened fire directed at the victim who is yet to be identified,” said Mohlala.
He stated further that circumstances surrounding the shooting are being investigated but the security guard was arrested by the police and charged for murder.
Although preliminary investigation reveal the fire arm used in the shooting belonged to the security company the officer worked for, the alleged firearm used has also been confiscated for further investigation.
The matter was postponed to 01 March 2023 for further investigation.
