Tuesday, 17 February 2026, was like a Hollywood movie when 26-year-old Mozambican national, Diofo Thomas Calangue, escaped from Evander Magistrate Court.
His escape came after a brief appearance for the case of a gruesome house robbery and rape incident that occurred in the early hours of Tuesday, 11 November 2025, at Extension 18, eMbalenhle where he abandoned bail.
His appearance came after he was linked to another case of housebreaking and theft through fingerprints.
After the court session at about 12h30, he walked out of court unnoticed, attempting to evade custody.
The court securities noticed him at a distance, and he started running towards town.
Vimba! vimba! vimba! A chase ensued, and he ran towards Evander High School, where it turned into a dramatic chase with some learners chasing him out of the school.
He then jumped the fence into Evander Gold Mine, where he was apprehended by the mining security personnel, together with the police.
