Two of the four accused made a brief appearance before the Evander Magistrate Court on Tuesday, 28 July 2026.
Thabi Letoaba (38), and Thabile Mapiya (36), were arrested alongside two other co-accused on Sunday, 26 July 2026, and are facing charges of theft of a motor vehicle and possession of stolen property.
The two appeared in court after they were allegedly found stripping off a vehicle at Ext 26, eMbalenhle.
Community members who were seeking help following the tragic incident in Marikana Section earlier that morning came across the scene.
It is alleged that the vehicle had been reported stolen from a church in Secunda.
The other two co-accused were not in court as they are still receiving treatment in hospital. However, they have also been charged with the same offences.
The matter was postponed for a formal bail application and for the presence of the two co-accused.
All four accused were remanded in custody and will be back in court on Tuesday, 04 August 2026.
Even so, the prosecutor informed the court that it is possible the two hospitalised co-accused may not appear on the next court date due to the nature and seriousness of their injuries.
