A 39-year-old man from Leandra was arrested on Monday, 06 February 2023 for assault GBV.
Allegations are that he hit his girlfriend with panga whilst they were fighting over their child.
The accused appeared before the Leandra Magistrate Court on Friday, 10 February 2023 for his bail application where he refused to be represented by a legal representative.
On the stand, he testified on the events that took place on the said date of the incident.
According to his testimony, the accused alleged that he went to his baby mama’s house with intentions to take his child for a weekend visit.
This is after they had separated two weeks ago when the accused moved out from the baby mama’s parental home.
Upon arrival, he said that he entered the baby mama’s residence and found her with two of her friends.
He further alleged that the three were drinking wine and the baby mama was drunk.
According to the accused, he requested for the for the child and on his way approaching the gate with the child in his arms. the baby mama grabbed him by the collar of his t-shirt behind him, he therefore reacted by pushing her on the side and she fell on the razer fence which cut her left hand.
The accused stated further that he only wanted to take his child.
The state prosecutor alleged that according to the victims statement, she was hit with a panga by the accused after receiving several hits from the unsharp part of the panga.
The victim also alleged that her friends witnessed the assault.
The accused was therefore remanded in custody for further testimonials by the victim’s friend on his character.
Outside court the victim was delighted that the accused is yet to spend a few days in custody.
