Ms Flora Maboa-Boltman was elected chairperson of the South African Local Government Association (SALGA) Women’s Commission nationally. Ms Boltman who hails from Kinross (Mpumalanga) and is currently serving at the Gert Sibande District Municipality was elected unopposed by all nine provinces during the Special National Lekgotla that took on 28-29 November at the Southern Sun OR Tambo Hotel, in Kempton Park.
The SALGA Women’s Commission (SWC) was established as part of a United Cities and Local Governments (UCLG) initiative which aims to strengthen gender equality within African local governments.
The Commission was launched in 2010 as a mechanism to institutionalize advocacy processes through the voice of women in local government and to ensure progress while supporting the national, regional and global goals of women empowerment and gender equality and equity.
