Govan Mbeki Municipality in conjunction with Risk Management and Tactical Response unit, Night guard and the South African Police Services SAPS went on a joint operation to clean Evander on Tuesday 18th April 2023.
The aim of the clean-up operation was to deal with individuals who are not adhering to the municipal bylaws.
The bylaw enforcement operation was focused on crime hotspots around Evander.
The operation went near Evander Taxi rank where there were illegal squatters.
The Risk Management and Tactical Response unit officials said these squatter camps are used to hide various criminal activities including drugs and act as a hideout for criminals.
‘’We once traced an IPhone which was stolen from Embalenhle and located it into this place, together with the gun used during the robbery. It is not like this people are homeless they are from around here and we know them, they should go back home,’’ said one of the officials From Risk Management and Tactical Response unit.
Individuals who were squatters were only allowed to take their Identity documents from their squatting place with reasons that if they let them take their belongings they would come back in the evening.
Dump trucks were used to collect everything to the dumping site.
