Schools within the Govan Mbeki Municipality took part in the under 17 winter games selection held at Kinross and Embalenhle Sasol club sports fields on Saturday, 06 April 2023.
The winter games are part of the department of Sports, Arts and Culture squad selection.
The purpose of the selection is to form a squad which will represent Govan Mbeki Municipality schools at the regionals selection in which will further go to provincial and national team selection.
Part of the selection was the girls’ soccer team and the boys’ soccer team.
Boys team selection selections were held at Kinross Sasol club, while girls were held at Embalenhle Sasol Club.
Part of the schools that participated were;
Osizweni Primary School;
Higveld Park High;
Kirizatswane Secondary School;
KI Twala Secondary School;
Thomas Nhlabathi Seconday;
Sizwakele Seconday School;
Ikhethelo Seconday School; and
Osizweni Secondary School.
Mr Ndzekeni Nkululeko, Chairperson of all sporting codes in Govan Mbeki Municipality, together with local coaches were part of the team selection.
Kwanele Mdaka from Osizweni Primary is the youngest soccer player selected in the ladies team after showing strong defence skills and scoring wonderful goals during the selection match.
Kwanele is currently 11 years old but plays with the under- 17- year group because of the potential she possesses.
‘’ I started playing soccer whilst in grade 3. I am very excited to be chosen as part of the team which will represent GMM.
Because of my love and passion for soccer, I would like to see myself playing for the National team Banyana Banyana,’’ said Kwanele Mdaka.
