The Minister of Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs (COGTA), Ms Thembi Nkadimeng handed over the equipped Sewer Pump Stations on Friday, 17 May 2024 at Extension 22 and 25, eMbalenhle.

The Minister of COGTA was joined by the Minister of Electricity, Dr Kgosientso Ramokgopa and Acting MEC of COGTA, Mr Speed Mashilo as well as the Gert Sibande District Municipality Mayor, Cllr Walter Mngomezulu, and the Govan Mbeki Local Municipality Mayor, Cllr Nhlakanipho Zuma.

This project handover advances infrastructure development and exemplifies the government’s commitment to improving the quality of life for all citizens.

Supported by the Municipal Infrastructure Grant (MIG), with a substantial funding allocation amounting to twelve million two hundred sixty-one thousand nine hundred fifty-six rand and seventy-one cents (R12,261,956.71), these sewer pump stations are changing the levels of sanitation services for the communities residing in wards 9 and 19.

The scope of the project, led by the Municipal Infrastructure Support Agent (MISA), includes engineering services, pump refurbishment, installation of electrical equipment, construction of stormwater drainage, and implementation of security measures.

This project ensures not only the efficient functioning of the sewer pump stations but also addresses broader environmental and public health concerns.

The project benefits 12,610 households and has created 21 local job opportunities and further empowered two SMMEs, this contributing to the growth and sustainability of the local economy.
