Nonhlanhla Nkosi appeared before the Evander Magistrates’ court on Friday,20 June 2025, for a bail hearing on new facts.
She was arrested in May 2024 on the N17, allegedly en route to Swaziland. She has been in custody since.
The defense presented her new facts through a bail affidavit.
In the affidavit, Nkosi stated that she now fears for her life, as she has been attacked twice by other inmates. She told the court that she was never taken to a healthcare facility after she had reported both incidents.
Nkosi further stated that she wants to be released on bail as there is someone trying to sell her grandfather’s property, where her sister and child reside.
However, the presiding officer questioned if she had reported the incident to correctional authorities, to which she replied that she had, and a solution of transferring her to a different facility had been suggested. She added that she refused, stating that it is far from her family.
Her bail was denied after the presiding officer stated that she was a flight risk and that, should she be released, she might proceed with her plans of fleeing to Swaziland.
She was remanded in custody and expected to appear in court in July, where her co-accused will plead guilty to the matter.
