The police have learnt with great sadness about the passing of two children, aged 03 and 08, on Saturday, 29 June 2025, at about 16h30. The father and mother, together with their three children, are said to have gone on a trip from Bushbuckridge to the Dientjie area. It is said that a devastating incident occurred to them while the father was busy fetching water from the Treur River.

It is reported that the father parked the car next to the main road and walked along the river with his wife and three children. The distance they walked was about 500 metres from the main road. It is said that it was during the time when the man was busy fetching water when the drowning occurred. The woman called for help, and then the man ran quickly and managed to save one child (10), whilst the other two were not saved.

Police, together with other role players, including the emergency medical personnel, were alerted about the incident, and they immediately rushed to the scene. However, on arrival, the two children were unfortunately pronounced dead.

The Acting Provincial Commissioner of the SAPS in Mpumalanga, Major General (Dr) Zeph Mkhwanazi, has pleaded with community members and, more especially, parents to be extra vigilant now that the children are on their school holidays so as to prevent unfortunate incidents during this period.
