The University Sports South Africa (USSA) hosted it’s annual football tournament at Sasol Club facilities around Govan Mbeki Municipality with over 20 Universities participating in the games.

USSA was founded within the tertiary education sector in order to represent and protect the sporting interests of all students at member institutions based on the principles of unity.

USSA purpose is to maximise and develop student participation and encourage sporting practice and complementary to the academic character and values of tertiary education institutions.

Despite the weather changes and all the grounds being waterlogged at all Sasol Club sports fields , organisers of the event managed to secure fields from Sasol club and Secunda stadium where the games were scheduled till late in the evenings.

With limited fields, the tournament still continued successfully.

“The tournament started on Monday, unfortunately the weather proved to be against us as there was heavy rains which forced us to suspend play on the first day due to waterlogged fields.

This led to unavailability of fields during the tournament.

We therefore had to improvise to try and finish the tournament on the set date.

The desire to play from all the teams is what kept us going and the standard of football all the teams showed”, said Mr Thabo Mabuya who is the tournament convener.

On Friday, 09 December 2022 the tournament proceeded to the finals which were held at Sasol Club Secunda where the University of Johannesburg (UJ) both men and women won section A of the tournament.
