While the Department of Basic Education gets ready to welcome Grade 3 and 10 learners on Monday, 20 July 2020 more cases of Covid-19 are being reported in schools.

44 schools within Gert Sibande District Municipality already recorded 60 cases of Covid-19 since the schools re-opened, of which 38 are teachers, 16 learners and 6 others.

On Tuesday, 14 July 2020 Sadtu called for the Department of Basic Education to shut down schools until after the Covid-19 peak. Today Nehawu, YCLSA and Cosas announced their support to Sadtu’s call for schools closure.

National Department of Basic Education released a statement committing to meet with the different stakeholders, but insisted that the schools continue until further announcement.
